We all leaned against Jaredâs Charger, each of us trying to figure out what Yamuna meant when sheâd said âeternityâ was the final ingredient. That could mean anything, but I had a feeling it would involve killing some kind of Eidolon immortal.
âItâs obviously vampires,â Arick said as he jumped away from the car. âWhat else could it mean? Sheâs been killing vampires until nowâso she just needs one more.â
âMaybe,â Jared conceded. âBut sheâs already got the vampiresâif she needed another she would have already taken it.â
I didnât want to agree with Jared just yet, but I nodded anyway. That problem would have to wait for another day. Keiji crossed his arms, tapping his foot against the concrete out front of Yamunaâs house.
âIt could be a witchâs elixir,â he suggested. âMany of those need rare ingredients, and take time toâ¦marinate, so to speak.â
Jared sighed, something that sounded more like a growl. âThereâs too much that it could be. For all we know âeternityâ is just the ramblings of a psychopath.â
âI donât think anything Yamuna says are simple ramblings,â I argued. My tone had more venom than it should have, and Jared caught it. So did Arick and Keiji, and I knew Azazel had as well. I looked down at the cat and saw his collar was about to fall off. He scratched at it so I bent down to pull it away from him.
âThat wonât be coming off so easily,â Jared said, distracted. As I pulled at the collar it didnât budge. âSee?â
âYouâre not going to bother lying now, are you?â I asked. âIâm surprised, I didnât think people were so capable of change.â
Arick squeezed his eyes shut as I stood, maybe thinking that Jared and I were about to start a screaming match. Iâd never been in one before, but Iâd never felt so angry before either. At least not while I was in my right mindâand not having visions of Harker.
âYou know what?â he said. âWe need to talk.â
I resisted rolling my eyes. Jared looked to Arick and Keiji and all he had to do was point in the other direction and they were gone. Neither of them wanted to get involved in this, and I understood why. Still, I wasnât impressed with how easily they had run offâor how fast.
âIâ¦â Jared began, his face twisting into all sorts of pained expressions. âI am sorry I lied. I should have told you the truth when we first met, but I didnât thinkâ¦â He shrugged. âI didnât think I would be seeing you again.â
I lifted my eyes to meet his gaze. âYou didnât think it would matter,â I concluded.
I hated that I understood that. I hated how I was able to make sense of it, and how it actually managed to take away some of my anger. âYouâre making sense,â I told him.
He sighed with a grin. âI always make sense.â
âNot to me,â I said. Finally I averted my gaze, unable to look at him now. My anger quickly turned to guilt, and just a bit of shame.
